Stress and MS

Of the many theories I studied, cognitive behavioral therapy is very good at stress reduction and it is my first choice for a therapy for clients with chronic disease. According to Pahlavanzadeh, Abbasi and Alimohammadi (2017), psychological aspects are one of the factors that could influence the quality of life in patients with MS. They conducted a clinical trial and concluded that cognitive behavioral therapy could decrease stress, anxiety and depression in patients suffering from MS. In childhood, I distinctly remember the feeling of my body tightening up painfully when, as Lazarus and Folkman (1990) said, I perceived demands made of me from people around me that exceeded what I was capable of fulfilling. That situation unfortunately carried on into my married life and the stress which had been continuous without relief, became negative and impacted my body (Pinel and Barnes. 2017). I firmly believe that stress, anxiety and depression were the psychological triggers for my MS.

CBT can't be forced on a person with MS. I got exposed for it unwilling and I got worse. Now 2024 I have performed CBT on myself. 4 years of small steps. Now I'm less stressed. CBT works when you're ready to receive it or perform it on yourself on your terms. Of course everybody responds differently but I had to do it for myself. Really hope their will work out on you'll too.
