Home adaptations

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help? My mobility has declined massively and I'm now having regular falls. I am using my wheelchair at home where possible. We live in a 4 bedroom semi detached house. It has a downstairs toilet and shower so I'm sorted there. However, climbing the stairs has become very difficult and very dangerous despite my two rails. We are seriously considering a stairlift. I have my OT coming on Tuesday but I just wondered how much of this is means tested? I work as a HLTA in a primary school and my husband is a mechanical engineer so we do have good wages. I feel as though we won't get much help with these things despite us not having oodles of savings. To make my home fully accessible, in going to need a ramp at the front, a stair lift and some of my kitchen modified so my wheelchair can access more of the house.

Hey! I had adaptations from my council (so free). They came and assessed all my needs. I ended up having grab rails by the bath (as I had a nasty fall in there!), a better hand rail to get up and down the stairs, a bath seat (which I returned as the grab rails were enough), steps to help get into the bath (for fatigued days/times) and a stool to use when cooking in the kitchen and need a quick sit down before my legs give way! It was a lengthy process to get the council to help, but I’m glad I did now. X

Hope the ot will guide you in the right direction as regards finances, and what adaptations they feel you need x
