Needs

Psychologist Abraham Maslow formulated a “Hierarchy of Needs”, which illustrates what an individual requires to survive. I see this hierarchy as a roadmap and a guide that I sometimes discuss with my clients to determine which of their needs are not being met. Where are you on this hierarchy? Which of your needs are unmet? If you live with chronic disease, like MS, this exercise can be particularly illuminating. The hierarchy lists physical needs at the base of the pyramid: food, water, warmth and rest The pyramid's second level is safety and security The third level is belongness and love: family and friendships The fourth level is esteem needs: prestige and a feeling of accomplishment The top of the pyramid is self-actualization: achieving one's full potential, including creative activities
