First Post Here….

Hello all, My names Ryan. First post here. Hope you are all enjoying life as much as possible! I was diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting this November. At the same time as this I had just started a new job, and moved house, so plenty of stress that has increased symptoms a bit. Now I know I have MS, and I understand what it is, I think that have had symptoms for a long time. Possibly 18 years; definitely 5. I was suppose to go on to Kesimpta a month ago but had what might have been a chest infection, so laying it of till a bit later after talking with MS nurse. Have actually always had an issue with breathing. Doctors prescribed me an asthma inhaler a while back, didn’t help much. I’ve had thicker than normal mucus for a good few years now. Exercise clears it a bit. Following the bad chest it’s got thicker, keeping me up at night. Anyone know if this is an MS thing? I’ve had bad sinus drainage for years as well.

Hello and welcome ! I just wanted to say that in recent months I have been experiencing a kind of thick-ish mucus drainage. It’s not like a runny sinus infection, but it’s there every morning especially and it has woke me up several nights. Your’s is the first time I’ve seen anyone raise this issue. Makes me wonder if it is an MS phenomenon. I’m going to ask my doctor at upcoming appointment. It’s not like an allergy. No sneezing. Just yucky frequent drainage. Yuck.

No, Ryan, this doesn’t sound like an MS thing. Breathing difficulties as such with MS don’t really happen commonly - though you can get the sensation of shortness of breath with an MS hug or with very advanced MS (which it doesn’t sound like you have you can get recurrent aspiration pneumonias). There’s lots of things your increased sputum could be - sinusitis (infected or chronic), allergies, or maybe bronchiectasis. If you have been a heavy smoker in past or exposed to any occupational respiratory hazards, it could be COPD? I think you should see a GP in the first instance and see if they’ll refer you I for an xray or if they have any thoughts. Tell them the inhaler didn’t help.
