Exhausted MSer

I've come into hospital with a heat induced relapse. Bad hand tremor (had before in previous relapse), blurred vision (same) and neck tremor (new). My legs are also worse than they were before (minimal movement before anyway). I came in A&E on Tuesday night to be told I'll have an MRI before steroids. The night reg admitted he messed up and didn't order the MRI so didn't get it. Moved onto AMU then another ward to be told yesterday that I wasn't haven't an MRI that day either. I explained that in previous relapses, I have been given steroids asap as when it's this bad, they have a better chance of working the sooner you take them. I have to really fight for this. My issue is they don't have my neuros here but that hospital is 1.5 hours away. The neuros visit here on a Tuesday and Friday (they told me that eventually yesterday). Anyway, after basically saying I'll discharge myself if I don't get steroids soon because there's no point in me being here, they arrive. A doctor who clearly has no ms experience said that tremor isn't an MS thing and they also want to do an EEG for epilepsy! I KNOW tremor is an MS thing, I've been dealing with it all over my body for 8 years. So, today brings another day in a place of constant battle for my MS and making sure I get my other steroid doses. Wish me luck!

Hi Sorry to hear. I need to go to work, please excuse being brief. There are proper relapses that generally speaking respond to steroids and there are things that feel like relapses and can be brought on by heat. The latter don't respond to steroids as there is no underlying inflammation. (And there would only be side effects of the steroids without any benefit.) To differentiate, please get an MRI. If possible stay cool (easier said than done, admittedly), cold wet towels, long cool showers, have friends bring icepacks to keep in bed (but no direct contact with skin!) and see if this makes a difference to symptoms. Extreme heat can also trigger epilepsy symptoms. Is the tremor permanent, what makes it worse/better? Please keep us in the loop. Keeping my fingers crossed! 😊

Oh, or get a friend with air conditioning in a car and transfer to the other hospital. You arrived on Tuesday, they had 48+h to watch you. Time to get this sorted out. Going straight to steroids without an MRI doesn't sound sensible, IMHO.
