Depression
Many people seek counselling for depression. I always interview my clients to try to ascertain the cause of their depression and determine the best course of treatment.
In many cases our discussion reveals a high occurrence of familial depression (heritability) going back generations. Sometimes the depression is triggered by work stress, unrelenting anxiety or illness (HELLO MS!).
Combinations of factors, such as heritability combined with job stress, are often responsible for my clients’ depression. Many high-functioning, depressed clients freely admit to feeling “burnt-out.” During our discussions, I help my clients analyze their situation and I help them assess whether they need some time to recoup their mental and emotional strength. Digging into the cause of depression is a little bit like going on a treasure hunt. The clients are often delighted to uncover the cause of their illness and together, we map out a plan to address it.
