A Basic Human Right
Being self-determined, i.e. taking control of your life and your emotions, is a basic human right. Self-determination is not seen as an inexorable human function, rather a human right, basic to all individuals who have the ability to reason, the capacity for growth and the choice of their own actions.
In the field of health care, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) can be used to motivate patients undergoing treatment for such physical or psychological issues as
diabetes management smoking cessation
post-traumatic stress obsessive-compulsive disorder
depression
The motivation which comes along with self-determination doesn’t mean that if you are suffering from a disease such as cancer or MS you can simply motivate yourself out of it, but it does mean that you can motivate yourself to live your best, healthiest life IN SPITE OF the disease. I myself am high in self-determination and while I hate exercising, hate it with a passion, here I still am every day going for a walk. Yes, I walk “funny”, my legs don’t work normally, but darn it after 20 years of living with MS I’m still walking (like a gimp, LOL).
Hell yeah!!!
