Daily Briefing Covid-19 [14th April '20]

Howdy (in the words of the inimitable Aaron Boster), - I watch my young neighbour go to and fro in their car and I can't help but wonder. The rational side of my brain tells me he must be doing something essential. Doesn't wear gloves.... Then he and his girlfriend appeared all dressed up a few evenings ago. No gloves... We share a communal area of the flats, I am not a curtain twitcher as my office overlooks the parking area so I can't help but see. I rather wish I didn't as it wouldn't bother me. Mrs S and I have taken to regular wiping of the door handles and bannisters with a very bleachy smelling cleaner. I wonder if they'll get the hint. A car can go on fire so easily these days and if it weren't parked next to ours I am pretty certain it would have developed an electrical fault, causing a fire. Dodgy German engineering I guess. If it carries on I may have to revert to the time-honoured nails carelessly dropped near the tires. Hey ho, accidents happen. MS makes me so clumsy. Officer. -------- MS Stuff -------- A good spot from Abigail Budd (@AbiBuddComms) on Twitter is this interesting study about genetic/hereditary elements. When I told the MS Team that I was going to be a father some 18 and a bit years ago I have a very strong memory of the then consultant just piping up - almost apropos of nothing - to reassure me that there was no evidence that MS was hereditary. It wasn't something I had even considered until that point! It turns out that she may not have been as right as she believed. It is a fine distinction here as it is about genetic predisposition which I gather isn't exactly the same as straight hereditary issues. Genes. Not really my thing! https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ana.25717 - Many of the peeps here are from the US. If you are, then take a moment to help out - costs you nothing but a few minutes at the computer - to sign up here: https://www.covims.org/ We are all in this together. Do your bit! - Dr Brandon Beaber has made this video taking off Roxanne by the Police. You decide... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOgcmSG7MOc - On the Beaber note, I am interviewing him for your delectation this coming Saturday evening. I was chatting with @longboat and she told me that Beaber actually took a range of MS Meds to experience for himself the feelings of the side-effects. Apparently going crimson coloured with DMF (Tecfidera). I laughed as that happened to me every other day for about 7y. Kudos to him. It is always so hard to explain, especially without ma lot of swearing. And I found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=41&v=wvoXFGFwUR4&feature=emb_logo - A very interesting and wide-ranging post from Prof G here. He is on the frontline now. In it he says: "I predict that when the dust settles there will be many more deaths as a consequence of reconfiguring the NHS to deal with COVID-19 than there will be from severe COVID-19 itself. I am told that the London paramedics have seen a six-fold increase in calls for deaths at home during the lock-down compared to average. The question I ask is how many of these deaths could have been prevented if it wasn’t for the COVID-19 epidemic?" https://multiple-sclerosis-research.org/2020/04/mscovid19-musings-from-the-frontline/ - Dr Brandon Beaber talks here (yesterday April 13th) about the possibility of a second wave and about the potential protective effects of DMTs and also the effect of DMTs on vaccination response. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKshXMxR3as It is a longish video but if you like to know what is going on from an expert then settle in. - I'm just going to say Howard Wallowitz and leave it there. - I think the message here is don't be tempted. If The Great Orange One says something is good it is even more likely that it isn't... https://multiple-sclerosis-research.org/2020/04/hydroxychloroquine-top-trumps-covid/ "Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, on the back of Donald Trumps continued promotion of hydroxychloroquine, the US Food and Drug administration has said that it will allow the use of antimalarials, such as hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for the treatment of COVID19." -------- Social Stuff -------- I wish I could be witty and interesting here. A goal I am striving to hit one day. In the meantime, I need to go and curate the questions for tomorrow's interview. This is already very late. Apols. - Stay safe, enjoy the sun (if you have it) and stay away from the feckless youth.
