I have posted on here before about my son diagnosed with RRMS in 2014. He had lots of relapsing but no remitting. A couple of years ago it progressed to SPMS. Over the last year he got rapidly worse, couldn’t walk outside, furniture surfed around his house, regularly needed help to feed himself, fell numerous times a day. He was lonely and unhappy, not depressed, not that at all, he had many friends. But he decided that his quality of life was not enough - even his excellent consultant said that what life he had would not be enough for him and he had a career, a wife and child. Winters were always unbearable and he decided that he would not do another one. He set a date, the Autumn equinox and took an overdose of pregabalin(275) but it didn’t work. The consultant and psychiatric team he saw the next day said they could see it was not a cry for help or a crisis, it was a well thought out decision. The consultant told me he had probably seen overdoses most days of his years on A&E but he had never seen such a sad case as Patrick’s. 4 days later he tried something else and succeeded. He left a letter for police and ambulance and the coroner and he wrote his own Eulogy. He left a letter for all who knew him explaining his decision. More than 150 people attended his funeral and no one left not understanding his decision. I miss him immensely but I am so proud of him, as his first line of Eulogy said: MS is a c***. He shouldn’t have had to take his own life, I am haunted by the horror I know his final hours must have been but I am at peace with his decision because he is now free. He could never accept that he was disabled and he could not live that way. He was losing the person he was. He was my son and I will strive to do what he asked - Smile Because I Was Here.
