MS & chemo?

Hi, has anyone with MS gone through bowel cancer and chemo with Capecitabine? I have had relapsing remitting MS since 2008, well under control for last 6 years with Avonex. I'm recovering well from a bowel cancer op, and meant to start chemo but oncologist now saying that the drugs can cause permanent nerve damage, so I have to decide if I want to have 3 months of Capecitabine. Any help would be gratefully received!

Hi @sueb and welcome. I'm sorry to hear that you've had these two conditions to contend with. I'm not sure we would have the necessary experience to provide an answer to your question. But, I would pose the question to your MS Nurse, so that they can refer it onto your Neurologist. Maybe, your Neurologist and Oncologist need to have a chat together........

Hi @stumbler - thank you for your reply. I have already been in touch with my MS nurse, and she suggested I go on this chatline... My neurologist is aware of my situation, and just said that I must stop Avonex during chemo. I suggested that my oncologist could have a conversation with my neurologist, but she dismissed the idea, saying they both work in the same hospital and as she has never had a patient with MS and bowel cancer, he won't either so no point! I was hoping that there is someone in the world in the same situation, who could offer some insight into the risks of this chemo.
