Trouble swallowing.

So I was diagnosed with RR in 2009, but really don't have any symptoms. I am tired all the time and my memory sucks, but that is all. However in the past week or so I have noticed that somethings are harder to swallow than normal. Is this something that is going to keep getting worse and eventually I won't be able to swallow at all? I am only 38...and scared.

Hi @mandrew05 and welcome. The unknown can be scary, but that is what everyone faces, MS or not! You're on Gilenya, which is one of the more powerful Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs), so this will helpfully stave off further deterioration. Problems swallowing or dysphagia is a symptom of MS. There are more details here :- https://www.mstrust.org.uk/a-z/swallowing But, generally, try not to stress yourself out about the MS, or anything. Stress can invoke a further relapse, so stress is best avoided. Medical science is working hard to avoid us continuing to get worse. There are now a variety of DMTs available to us and there is good research into the benefits of stem cell transplantation. So, compared to 10 years ago, things in the MS world are looking better.

Hi mandrew05 I have the swallowing issue too. I was referred to a Swallowing and Speech Therapist in an attempt to make swallowing easier or as normal as possible. My main problem was swallowing liquids, had to really force them down as they would get stuck at the back of the throat, too small an entrance or hole. The trick is to take small sips and to tilt your head forward resting your chin into your chest, should be easier to swallow then. Also works with food so long as you chew properly and dont take on board too much as in mouthfuls.
