The Miracle Question

This is a question I often pose to my clients who present with specific problems. It is a version of The Miracle Question from Solution Focussed Therapy. The problem is as individual as the clients: depression, anxiety, eating disorder, alcohol or substance addiction, relationship problems, illness, disease, poverty etc. It can be any problem and the point of the question is to help people imagine their lives without the problem. This question has led to much self-analysis on the part of the client and some, to their shock, realize they can’t imagine a life without the problem that has become such an integral part of their lives. They identify so closely with that problem that it is literally who they are. “I am poor, I am an alcoholic, I have MS, I am learning disabled”... What is your answer to this question? “Imagine when you go to bed tonight a miracle occurs and when you wake up in the morning, you don’t have (insert name of problem) anymore. What is the very first thing you would notice that is different in your life?”
@Snail-train

Err thats a bit of no brainer tbh- no ms equals doing a million things i dont do now- id go out more, go running, go on a spontaneous holiday, do a job that challenges me rather than one thats good for my ms. The list is endless. I don’t think you can apply this question to people with MS

@Happy_Wanderer

@Snail-train - on one hand I agree, MS can limit a lot of things. On the other hand, I have personally become much more of a “do it while you can” person since being diagnosed. When I have a good day I make much more effort to make the most of it. Pre-MS I was much more likey to “do it tomorrow”. Therefore I find the question quite thought provoking to compare me now to me before MS, to what me without MS would do if suddenly I didn’t have it. Just my personal thoughts.
