Confused

What do I say to my friend that that cheers me up on a bad day by saying "It won't be long before you get your scan results now, and the doctor will look at the scan, see there's nothing there. . . he gives you a pill and your mended! " Does he think I'm making all this illness up??? XXX

Hi! I’m new here and newly diagnosed but I’d suggest letting them know -within adequate bounds of your friendship- how you feel about the situation. Something similar has already happened to me even after just a week and it’s incredible how much directness helps. Best of wishes!!!

He might be trying to think positively and believes that he's helping you by saying things like that, or he could be a thick-headed jerk. Step back from the hurt for a minute and think about what he's been like in the past. Has he supported you and been a good friend, or is he the one who's always ready with a snarky, insulting comeback? If it's the first, just explain to him calmly that those kind of comments hurt you. Try to explain the steps you have to go through to get a diagnosis and how stressful and frightening it is to know that something's wrong but not have a name for it. If he's the latter, it might be time to lose him as a friend. One thing that MS has taught me is that life's too short to sweat the small stuff, and that includes small-minded people.
