Cultural Considerations
Self-determination is viewed differently in different cultures and countries. It is actually a complex concept evolved from Western society.
In Eastern cultures, the concept of interdependence is much more prominent than in the West, where we value individual independence. It’s worth noting that your view of self-determination may be shaped and heavily influenced by your cultural heritage.
How does your cultural background view people who need assistance with aspects of daily life? People with depression? Anxiety?
Does the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) work ethic drive you to work towards being as self-determined as possible, or are you content to let others help you where and when they can?
