Newly Diagnosed, about to start Kesimpta

Hi Everyone 👋 I'm brand new to the world of MS having been diagnosed a month ago. It's been a whirlwind of emotions as you can probably relate to. I've been proactive and mostly positive since the diagnosis but every now and then feel quite overwhelmed. My symptoms are mainly numbing in my feet, legs and left arm and the electric shock sensation when I bend my neck. I live a really active lifestyle and just want to do everything I can to keep the mobility I have. My neurologist is hoping to get me started on Kesimpta soon. I've been really nervous about starting a treatment, but my MS is very active at the moment with many new lesions appearing on an MRI scan 2 months apart. Would love to hear stories of how you stay active with MS! Thanks, glad to have found this group.

The evidence is strong for maintaining a healthy lifestyle with MS, so you’re thinking along the right lines! The best exercise is the one that you will do consistently of course and what fits in to your life - but what evidence there is favours a combination of aerobic (preferably HIIT), yoga/pilates for flexibility/strength, and resistance training. Then targeting any weak spots such as balance or core strength. Aaron Boster is a good neurologist to follow on YouTube and he has a few videos on the importance of exercise. Diet important too - I broadly follow OMS (overcoming MS) but a standard healthy “Mediterranean” diet rich in fibre, fruit and veg, lower in saturated fat, is the key. I don’t cut anything out completely but eat less dairy/meat/sugar than I used to. Back away fast from anyone who talks about ‘must do’ fads - no gluten, overgrowth of candida, and the like. There’s a lot of niche diets out there promising to cure or control your MS. People get desperate when they get new symptoms or have a relapse - but a good rule of thumb is if anyone tells you that by doing this one thing, giving up this one food group, it will turn things around for you, they’re mistaken. Lifestyle is a very long haul thing in MS, you’re building reserve for future. Good luck!

Good luck with Kesimpta. I've been on it nearly a year with no side effects. I love it. I agree with not listening to suggestions about cutting this and that out of your diet. it's all nonsense.
