Terrible lipoic acid reaction

Has anyone had success with lipoic acid? In my newly-diagnosed-with-MS desperation to try anything I gave 1200mg a go after reading that study done on it (http://nn.neurology.org/content/4/5/e374.full). Day 1 just had a headache, the second day I took it, had breakfast, and two hours after taking it I got horribly dizzy, vomited, and had the most horrendous hypoglycemic symptoms (tremors, tachycardia, cold, clammy, weak) and had to eat A LOT of carbs before feeling better. I knew that it could mess with blood sugar, and I am not a diabetic, but imagine my horror when I read this study linking lipoic acid to insulin autoimmune disease (Hirata disease): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3161272/, which, thank goodness, is usually self-limiting Further investigation and I found that lipoic acid is chelating - it pulls mercury out of your cells, (which is why you can get a headache), but what's more, because of it's short half life (3-4 hours) there will come a point where there is no longer any lipoic acid available for the mercury to bind to, so you just have mercury floating around doing who know what kind of damage! (http://clubtbyh.com/2016/07/26/are-you-taking-alpha-lipoic-acid-please-stop-until-you-read-this/) Not to mention the fact that I found this article with the caveat "It’s important to consider that antioxidant vitamins stimulate the immune system. In MS, an overactive immune system is part of the disease process and stimulation may be dangerous" (http://www.direct-ms.org/pdf/NutritionMS/DoAntioxidantsTreatMS.pdf) Needless to say, I will not be taking this supplement any longer, after quite possibly giving myself insulin autoimmune syndrome and mercury toxicity! I just wanted to share my story and what I have learned about lipoic acid to spread awareness that while rare, these things may happen with this antioxidant. I'd also like to know if anyone else has had similar problems, or great successes! And if anyone has any sources to share regarding it's safety profile
@Purl2

This is quite a story!!! I don't have anything to report as I've never taken this item... but my guess is that you should be under the care / guidance of some sort of naturopath before starting any regimen like this! Hope you feel better!

@potter

I have been taking ALC for about 6 months 200mg in the morning and 200mg at night. I haven't had any problems but one of the article said to take it for 2 or 3 days and then skip a couple of days. I don't think I have any amalgen filling left in my mouth, but I should check. It said you shouldn't take it at all if you have those old fillings in your teeth. Thank you for the information. Potter
