Transverse Myelitis

Hi All The first identifiable symptoms I had were pins and needles, numbness and various other bizarre effects in my arm which then spread to my leg, including the Hermitte effect when I flexed my neck. After many tests the results were MS, Transverse Myelitis and probably Carpal Tunnel. Does anyone know what the association between MS and TM is? and would a drug like Aubagio have an effect on the TM. My specialist is more than keen for me to start Aubagio, but my understanding is that TM is potentially devastating but is best treated with steroids. I really don't want to end up on a load of toxic drugs that have minimal impact on the condition but maximum effect on my body. I know that steroids are effective for the TM but do they have any impact on the MS. At the moment it is a bit like wading through treacle trying to separate out what is part of the condition and which problems have a different source. So far have seen a urologist next stop Gastro Enterologist, then heaven knows who else. CillaW

@cillaw . Transverse Myelitis (TM) is symptomatic of MS and is usually a term used if a formal diagnosis of MS cannot yet be made :- http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm#3234_1 It's the MS that causes the inflammation (a relapse) which can result in the TM. Now, Steroids are administered to address a relapse and help the inflammation to reduce and heal. But, scarring may remain, which will potentially cause ongoing problems. Whereas, Aubagio, a Disease Modifying Treatment (DMT), is used to try and reduce the frequency and severity of relapses. So, Steroids are a reactive treatment, whereas a DMT is a proactive treatment. DMTs are powerful treatments, with risks. But, these risks can be mitigated with monitoring. There is a lot to learn when new to MS, but we'll try and answer your questions for you.
