To walk quickly or to work on my balance

I've seen quite a few neuro physiotherapists. I've often asked what is more of a priority; to hold on to the rails of a treadmill and try walking at a decent pace, (this is supposed to encourage the messages to travel quicker) or to walk on a treadmill at a very slow pace and try to not touch the sides in order to work on my balance and walking? I imagine the best thing to do would be to alternate between the 2 approaches when at the gym. But if someone put a gun to my head and said that I have to choose one, which should I choose? My walking is very slow and I do walk with a poor gait. I've been going to the gym for this last year and can notice the positive affects of the gym on my mobility. Albeit the changes are only slight and not as big as what I would've wished for.
