Any advocates?
Hi, this is my first time posting 👋🏼
I was wondering if there are any advocates or individuals with medical or legal (UK) expertise on here? I hope this is okay to post, I am just at a loss.
I had an accident in 2019 with whiplash, which resulted in almost immediate neck and back pain that is ongoing till this very moment. The ongoing pain from the accident is what led to my diagnosis of MS last year, as scans were done to establish the cause of pain. I had made an injury claim following the accident, and now I find myself being in disagreement with the 'medical expert' as he, after a very cold, tick box style consultation, and after seeing the evidence produced since the first scan, feels that the accident has nothing to do with the onset of MS.
Even though I didn't know it at the time, numbness was my 'first evident symptom', which started a few months post accident, even though from my research, pain is also a symptom of MS, which started almost immediately post accident. I've done some research and found medical evidence to suggest that trauma can likely lead to the onset of MS and feel the report was completed with a very closed mind.
I have been blessed/cursed with a fighter spirit, and this is a fight I feel I need to take on for people to understand MS better and take it more seriously. Learning is endless.
If you got this far, thank you for taking your time to read it.
I understand how you are feeling. Unfortunately it is still very much unknown what exactly causes ms. Yes trauma could be a starting point but genetics and external factors could also be a big factor. So I can understand why you have had the experience you have had. I have struggled with the whole lack of understanding too. I am currently going to ask my neurologist if he can tell me from my mri scans which areas of my brain are effected and therefore maybe show why I have the symptoms I have. Though I also understand this may never give definitive answers. The fighter spirit is strong within me too. This will help you. Dont let the ms beat you. A friend with ms and I have always said ms is like being in a boxing match. You have to fight or it could knock you out. This keeps me going, jeeps me fighting. I have found doing what you can to improve your diet, exercise, mental state are the positives ms has brought to my life. Basically do what you can and take solace and pride in the fact you are helping yourself. I have started helping at a foodbank and being a much more productive member of society through my ms. I take pride in this. I take value in helping others.
@Nute Hi, thanks for your response, I appreciate it. I fully appreciate that there is still a whole lot that is unknown about ms. I am not necessarily saying that the absolute starting point, but I definitely feel as though it was the spark that lit the fuse. I hope you are able to get the information you require for your learning and understanding from your neurologist. Glad you have the spirit too. I am definitely not one to give up anything easily, but it takes it's toll. I am currently without any formal care as my assigned nurse was never available and the consultant just disrespectful, so I have been managing myself quite well if I may say so, for the past 7 months since my official diagnosis. A part of me is grateful though, as I don't think I've ever been in such good condition in my life as I am now. I need to find somewhere to give my time as well, it is definitely fulfilling. Good on you for doing what you do 🙂
