Re-purposing drugs

Re-purposing drugs is one of the ways we can accelerate the drug development. Currently any effective treatment would take at least 15-20 years in clinical trials. That would be much too late for us folk and more for people with progressive disease. Pharma obviously won't invest in off patent drugs because of the lack of financial incentive. But are there are any ways we can lobby a government, UN, charities to raise money or change the existing model?

Have alook at this website, @ahmed :- http://www.ms-smart.org/

Novartis in Basel, who make fingolimod ( gilenya) , are going into phase 111 trails for Azerra. This drug has been used already to treat cancer, but is showing really good results in treating RRMS. They will eventually pay Glaxo Smith Kline over 500 million to develope this drug for MS use. Very good news for the next generation of drugs I think and a really good reason to look again at existing drugs. Onwards and up wards!!
