Reading

I read A LOT in spite of dealing with MS-caused nystagmus. I recommend reading to all of my clients who enjoy reading and want to learn more about the troubles they are experiencing. While some of my reading is, well, dry and pedantic (Existential Therapy in the Western World, for example), I have found books which are well-written and entertaining. These are the books which I enjoy reading and recommend to my clients, depending on their problems. For clients with body image issues: Body Kindness by Rebecca Scritchfield (works for MS-related weight gain too) Trauma: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk Fear of Aging (or ending up in a long-term care home): Being Mortal by Atul Gawande Chronic Disease: When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate (I particularly liked the chapter that deals with MS) The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge Depression & Anxiety: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle The Dalai Llama’s Little Book of Inner Peace “I’m not sure what the problem is”: Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown (except we MS'ers know full-well what the problem is; still this is a good read Low Self-Esteem: This Messy, Magnificent Life by Geneen Roth and of course (blatant self-advertising alert here) for dealing with MS: A Quiet Roar by Heidi Redl
