Air travel & folding electric wheelchair

Hi all, how risky is it taking a folding electric wheelchair on a flight (putting it in the hold)? I’m planning on flying & taking my etech w/chair but wondering if it’s safer to use assistance in both airports & then hire a chair in Spain at my destination? I’ve read about how equipment is handled so badly by airport staff & risk of damage which would ruin my holiday. ***Edit - update*** I’ve booked a package 5day holiday with EasyJet! Couldn’t have been easier! Booked (excellent flight times there & back for our local airport) rang number given & arranged airport assistance & onto airplane, extra leg space on flight, accessible room at hotel. So helpful! 5* so far!!!!

When I flew down to Mexico City (Puebla) last year from Chicago, I used wheelchair service and it was excellent. No lines to check, customs, etc.

Hi @ColettePage - I’ve taken my rollator on several flights now and have been very impressed by the airport assistance. It was nerve wracking the first time, but the staff were brilliant - we’ve used Gatwick and Leeds- and you get whizzed along to the front of every queue and my rolly was handed over at the large luggage place and returned intact. I fully appreciate that any loss or damage to your wheelchair would be a game changer, but I guess there is also a risk over the suitability of hire equipment in Spain. It would be good to know if anyone has experience of doing that. Either way, I hope you have a great holiday.
