Dysphagia

Does anyone else have trouble with Dysphagia? I haven't been able to eat solid food for over 3 weeks now. I'm going in the morning for a barium swallow test tomorrow. Any advice or has anyone else have anything to share. Please this is really scary for me...

Hi, I'm afraid I don't have any knowledge around this other than it is probably a neurological cause - my Dad had it for a few weeks (he has dementia which is of course neurological) but it did seem to somehow right itself! He was also assessed by a speech & language therapist who advised pureed food for a while and then reviewed him, gradually bringing his diet back to a more normal one. I wonder if the barium swallow test is to first rule out any physical cause such as a problem with muscles? I wish I could help you more, but it may be worth asking about seeing a speech & language therapist

Thanks for your response. Here is what my patient portal says. I'm seeing my doctor today at 1:30 pm central time... I'll update you on what he says later if you would like. Normal Mucosa: Normal Distensibility: No Narrowing Gastro Esophageal JUNCTION: No hiatal hernia.GASTRO ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX: None STOMACH:The body of the stomach is narrowed. Twisting of the root is not demonstrated. Narrowing of the gastric body may be associated with a mural or infiltrative lesion versus diminished compliance of the gastric wall.. DUODENUM: Bulb and sweep are normal. IMPRESSION: 1. Diminished diameter and gastric waves at the gastric body without well--- defined rugal effacement. There is some luminal irregularity. Circumferential mass effect may be considered. However, ischemia is also possible. Matthew McClain
