Tecfidera in Abu Dhabi

Hey,

I got offered a teaching job in Abu Dhabi. Does anyone know if I can bring my tecfidera with me? I was thinking of bringing four months with me if I head off next week. I’d be home for Christmas, and I’d bring 6 months with me when I return in Jan.
Any help would be appreciated,

when I visited the States and was on Tecfidera, I took 2 months supply along with a letter from my GP (doctor) and after phoning the company to get an extended supply, so a long winded answer is yes

The good till time on Tecfidera is 90 days, I don’t know if keeping if refrigerated that long will extend it’s life. I was on Tecfidera for 6 years and the specialty pharmacy would ship it in cool packs during the summer. I would call Biogen and ask them. Potter

@phillip , the only storage requirements are stated as :-

“Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the blister and the carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not store above 30ºC. Keep the blisters in the outer carton in order to protect from light.”

So, you’ll need to check the potential expiry dates of the Tecfidera before you leave. Your supplier should be able to assist here.

This doesn’t answer the question of the minimum temperature which would determine whether to use the hold luggage or cabin luggage on the flight there and back.

Another question is whether the drug, or the amount of the drug, contravenes any laws. And whether a Doctor’s note would be sufficient to avoid any issues. Perhaps the UAE embassy can answer that one.

I rang biogen and they said as long as the tecfidera is within its expiry date, kept under 30 degrees and out of direct sunlight, it’s fine. Not sure where you’re getting the 90 days from.
There’s a few issues. My neurologist will give me a 6 month perscription no problem (if my bloods are ok). However tecfidera comes under the high tech scheme in Ireland. The high tech scheme only allows for the pharmacist to give you a 3 month supply of any medication. (Even tho you can get a 6 months supply of other medications).
My pharmacist told me that if he gave me 6 months he would only be paid for 3 months worth of the drugs.
I rang the high tech department and pleaded my case. His argument was that 3 months should give me enough time to get set up with a neurologist over there and go on their system. Tecfidera isn’t available in Abu Dhabi.
I’m going to ring my ms nurse tomorrow and see if she can do anything/knows if anyone who went away with 6 months worth of tecfidera before.
Absolutely sickened, enough issues without all of this.

Hi Philip,
I do not know through which company you are employed but I guess you have not told them about your condition due to the cost and insurance issues. Your health care provider is giving you 3months supply and after 3 months, which is your trial period, you can claim over there yet the issue is whether the company will be happy with the cost of the treatment and whether they will continue to employ you or not is a question. This is the dilemma l am going through and therefore, kind of stuck in SA where l was diagnosed. You do not need a visa to leave the country unlike here so fly over after 3 months and get the drugs and return back. that is my option whether it suits or not…
