@robyn_bain hello 🙂. I will also be on Tecfidera soon and would like to hear people’s experiences and tips for when I start the pills. I am the same as you I don’t eat in the morning but been really trying. My nurse said to eat something fatty like toast and peanut butter. I told her I try and eat weetabix with almond milk and she said that might be good as it has good fats… Anyway it would be good to see people replies I know my reply doesn’t help you much. Also I see you are from Glasgow too 😎.

Used to take them and my neuro said one of his patients swore by the following. Not my idea 😉

Take a date, full it with peanut butter, pop the DMF capsule it it and swallow it whole.

They swore blind that that slows it down and eased the potential shock to the system.

Assuming of course that you don’t choke to death on the delivery contraption. Each to their own.

Hello @robyn_bain. I was the same, can’t stomach food in the morning. Taking Tec forced me into having to eat breakfast, although not until 11. You should take them with something substantial, a balance of fat and protein. I have full fat yog, bit of fruit and lots of nuts for breakfast. Normal meal in the evening. Always take it half way through food. If you forget a dose, never take two at once. I think you must leave a minimum of six hours between tabs. When I started I had a few hot flushes, but been absolutely fine for three years. Good luck!

@emma_t QMUH? My nurse told me to eat food high in protein as that’s supposed to help with side effects today’s my second day and I’ve been fine so far (touch wood) 😂😂

@robyn_bain my neuro is a the QEUH my MS nurse is in East Kilbride. I guess it’s a bit of trial an error with this until you find what works best. A bit like the actual medication and choosing one lol. I’ve also be told I’ll have to be quite regimented and stick to the times I take it, so if I was out on a night out and had a long lie she recommends.. I don’t do that 😄. I’m sure cutting back on the alcohol wouldn’t be a bad thing anyway, Want to make sure the meds work best they can 🙂.

@emma_t I wasn’t told that about taking it at the same time 😅 did they send you out the little green book with all the info they sent me out that a month or so before I got the meds.

I take mine in the morning with breakfast around 7:00 am and at supper time 6-7:00. I find if I vary the time the flushing seems much worse and I’ve been taking it for nearly 5 years.

I have been on tecidea for some time now and apart from hot flushes over my entire body and extreme dry moth the flushing not so bad if i eat aome thing like peanut butter about half an hour befre

I started tecfidera a couple weeks ago and tbh I’ve struggled taking it at consistent times each day. I get a weird sort of travel sick type feeling and get a bit dizzy after a few hours but once it settles it’s gone.
The hot flushes have gotten worse now I’m on the full dose and I have got some stomach cramps but nothing is as bad as what I was expecting. I can’t say much else cause it’s so new to me, but the one thing I need to learn is the right foods to go with it cause so far that’s been my struggle.
My nurse said lunch and night would work for taking them, as long as there’s 8 hours between but I guess depending on what you take with them it might not work for you x

Hi @robyn_bain

I’ve been on it for 3.5 years. Mild flushing every now and then is my only symptom.

I am not that regimented in the timings. I find that I suffer no extra ill effects if my second tablet of the day is 10 – 14 hours after the first so if I have forgotten to take my tablet in the morning (which sometimes happens) I would try and have it lunchtime and just before I go to bed. This has worked out fine for me, as far as I can tell.

Though I must point out I have never had stomach cramping so taking a tablet on its own just before bed and without food, wouldn’t cause me any difficulties.

All the best

Dan

@robyn_bain it’s just like anything I suppose, you’re probably best taking it at the same time everyday but it seems some people aren’t that strict on times and are okay! Yeah I got that wee book 🙂 also has additional nurse support which is handy, it’s reassuring to see people on this drug for a few years now, 🤞🏻 It works you (and me haha).

@robyn_bain I’m sure it would be fine to take the first one at 12:00 as long as you waited to take the second dose till before bed. In cases that I’ve not taken mine with a meal, a snack of a scoop of peanut butter and a yogurt seem to be enough that I’ve never had stomach issues.
