Fecal urgency

Hi there! First time posting here. I was diagnosed with RRMS 8 years ago and am recently experiencing major fecal urgency. It’s scaring me.

Does anyone have any insight or advice?

I’m terrified that I’ll be out and the urge will hit me and there won’t be a bathroom nearby.

@amy_hauber Are you on Copaxone? Faecal urgency is a listed side-effect of that drug. Its one of the reasons I took myself off it.

If you aren’t on that drug you may need some other strategies but it is not insurmountable. You probably already know that a lot is to do with timing and what you eat and when, and when you choose to go it. It can take time to work out what is manageable. I have found it more of an issue in relapse.
good luck

@bernadette No, I’m on Tecfidera. Thanks for your input.

How long have you been on Tec? Have you noticed if this has coincided with anything else, e.g. start of new meds, a relapse, symptom triggers? I’m on Tec as well and I think some of the side effects listed are gastrointestinal, so just wondering if it could be related to that or a hangover of copaxone if you’ve just come off it? But overall I’d agree with @bernadette to work out triggers or patterns when you get this which’ll help you think about how to make it manageable – always worth speaking to your MS nurse about too!

@amy_hauber

Welcome to my nightmare… I have had more than a few embarrassing situations.

My wife is a Saint; my friends are very understanding. More than once when I got into my house, I ran into the shower – strip down & wash everything down the drain while washing my pants & underwear off… While my bowels are still emptying. Bleach afterward goes into the drain… 😉

My solution is completely rejecting spicy food; which I loved my whole life. Emptying my bowels before I leave the house; then eating very little when I am out… Not a perfect solution – yet has cut down the problem considerably; to less than once every few months…

And yes, there is always a clean pair of pants & underwear in the car in case I need a change of clothing when we go on a trip…

I’m literally minutes new to the group, but I’m going for botex for the bladder. I heard good things about it. Some ppl get it done every 6 months. I want to eliminate my medicine intake, so I thought this would be good.

These days most of my bathroom trips have some sense of urgency to them and I have found I need to be attentive to the early signs that I need a rest stop. I used to be able to put off a break until it was convenient…now I need to attend to it immediately…even if it is inconvenient. I have also found that if I skip a day the next day will have extra urgency – so consistent habits on my part seem to help as well. I try not to binge eat and keep to a regular schedule and my body has a more consistent pattern as well.

Dr Boster covers all topics, nothing is off limits 😉 This one on the “down there’s” you may find then informative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63hl9NOd22E

He is pro-broccoli ;-0 in contrast to highlanders first hand recommendation. As Dr Boster notes being constipated is also kind of a blessing as the extra time that gives me is helpful and necessary-

@amy_hauber. I’m going through the same problem at the moment. Had a few embarrassing accidents which had now made me anxious of going out. I’m not on an meds at the moment and have been waiting for weeks to see a neurology urologist, feels like months.

@ladylaura I’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with the same issue. It totally sucks. I wonder what drug you are taking?
