Hello - New joiner

Hi there good people, Finally plucked up the courage to join this community and connect with fellow MSers who "get it". I don't know anyone living with this disease and often feel quite alone. I work full-time (mostly at home since the pandemic) but have little energy left over to arrange much of a social life. My support network has dwindled in recent years; a mixture of flaky friendships withering (because I cannot do the fun things I used to), bereavement and dementia in my family and very recently a few good friends have become parents and are understandably busier. I have a small family and a couple of extremely selfish family members whom I find it hard to believe I am related. Essentially I feel like I have no support. Does anyone else find themselves in a similar situation with the people around them?

Hello. I hope you are doing ok today. This is a good place to get advice. Nearly all who are here will understand what you are going through to some extent. I have had similar experiences with friends and family not understanding or being too busy with life. Hang in there. You can make things better. There are ms support groups. I follow overcoming ms and they have groups all over the country. I am sure there are others. I found volunteering helpful. There is no pressure on how much you can do. It gives me more of a sense of purpose and there is always something you can do if you find the right place. I volunteer at a food bank, there are a few others who volunteer with health conditions so it is sort of like a support group, even though no-one really talks about their conditions. It does give me a sense of purpose and I feel I am helping others which I never thought possible. I would say finding just one person that knows what you are going through really helps. Whether on here or in a local ms group. I am fortunate in that my friend from uni also has ms so we can help each other if we can. I have found that even those without ms can find themselves in the same situation so we are not alone. You have made the first step in reaching out on here. Dont get disheartened, you are dealing with a difficult situation, but you can and will work through it and find your path. Hope some of this helps. Have a good day!
