@gothedistance , it’s quite possible, although Neuros like to use it, just to confirm what everything else is saying.

A formal diagnosis of MS has to satisfy the McDonald Criteria, which doesn’t always insist on it :-

@gothedistance

I received my diagnosis a few weeks before a lumbar puncture was done, based on an MRI and various other tests.

@gothedistance
I didn’t have a lumbar puncture – did have an MRI 22 years ago which was conclusive plus several relapses so I guess it wasn’t required (glad about that as it doesn’t sound much fun)

Thank you all.

I have been diagnosed without LP. MRI lesions, size and location in brain and SC were enough.

@gothedistance

I was diagnosed with no lumbar puncture I had an MRI but the neurologist suspected before any MRI that she felt I suffered MS after which within a week I had an MRI which confirmed her suspicions.

I never had one, my neurologist talked himself out of it. Said they were moving away from that and wasn’t always in the patients best interests

I was diagnosed without one. I had optic neuritis then fully recivered for a couple of years. I then had several relapses and another mri confirmed what they had suspected a couple of years before. He said there wasnt any need.

I was diagnosed 13 years ago without LP. Diagnosis was made on the basis of MRI of spine after diagnosis of transverse myelitis, Then MRI of brain and history having a daughter pre-diagnosed three years before.

I was diagnosed without one – I refused and my neurologist said it wasn’t needed, it just helps as ‘another piece of the jigsaw’. I was diagnosed based on symptoms and MRI’s showing lesions on brain and spine.

I was diagnosed dec 17 after optic neuritis from the july. I had MRI brain and spine, and a failed LP, he put needle in 6 times couldn’t get in the right place, i said no more thank you, neuro said he didn’t need it with the amount of lesions on both brain amd spine.

not essential for diagnosis as can be done via clinical picture and MRI, however it has been suggested that I have one as it can give information which are seen as prognostic indicators – neurofilaments and other things I don’t understand.

I was diagnosed without one – just based on symptoms and MRI.
