Lumbar Puncture and Dural Trauma

Like many of you here, I had a lumbar puncture as part of my diagnosis. Yesterday I learned about CSF pressure disruption. Apparently the CSF system is supposed to be a closed sealed system. Putting a needle in there can cause a leak. I rather wish I hadn't learned this much yesterday. I wish I hadn't been listening. I wish I'd never signed off on the consent form. I wish I'd not listened to my amatsu practitioner when she told me lumbar punctures are an insult to the body. I wish I could take back the days from this to that and take the other path. Like that moment in beauty and the beast when Belle takes the dark path because it looks like it'll be faster. I can still hear the music. This month I'll be working out if dural trauma is a thing and if Gertie-Marx needles should be a global standard. Are you leaking? Am I leaking? How would we know?

Good thing is, if you're leaking you can call up the place you got the puncture done and they can do a blood bandaid to help seal it. After your lumbar puncture, if you stayed laying down with your head straight up for an hour or so you are mostly out of the clear for having any issues. Drink lots of water, and do nothing for 2-3 days afterwards.

there are commercial solutions to the spectrum of leakage problems.....but not all leaks are problematic....some leakage problems are desirable goals, others not so much.... you do the math spinal leakage not so good, but manageable..... you will know you have spinal leakage.. for lots of reasons... all that said LPs in most cases are a complete waste of time vs risk....... ask your Neuro WTF I am doing LP.... because 80-90% of MS have positive OCB bands.... ? right so there is a link .... I know the McDonalds criteron etc. but I am really at a loss why the risk is required when the writing is on the wall in most cases.... I get the corner case scenarios where it is not obvious....shot in the dark to triage a problem... Last comment, new advanced LPs seek to determine other data, type of MS etc, but these are specialized and very very rare, still undergoing investigation....these are probably worth the risk but I don't know if these tests available yet on any NHS globally or just a Uni med school thing... you can't always get what you want...
