LONLINESS

This got me thinking, searching and realised how large of a problem this is, so many have like and commented on previous post on this subject, I share this content to encourage people to connect with interest and social groups; I truly believe this is everyone' way out of a dark situation. People with multiple sclerosis (MS) have roughly double the risk of suicide compared to the general population, with a pooled lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation around 20%, placing it among the higher tiers of suicide risk seen in chronic physical and neurological conditions.Statistics on MS and Suicide RiskStandardized Mortality Ratio (SMR): Studies consistently show that the risk of dying by suicide for people with MS is roughly 1.5 to 2.2 times higher than that of the general population.Suicidal Ideation: Meta-analyses estimate that about 20% to 23% of people with MS experience suicidal thoughts (ideation) during their lifetime.High-Risk Windows: The risk is notably elevated—more than double that of the general population—during the first few years following an MS diagnosis and among younger patients (onset before age 30 or diagnosed before 40).Comparison to Other ConditionsGeneral Population vs. Chronic Illness: While the general population has a lifetime suicidal ideation rate of roughly 10%, chronic physical and disabling illnesses generally elevate this risk.Neurological and Chronic Disorders: MS shares an elevated suicide risk profile with other chronic, debilitating, or central nervous system disorders (such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS]), where physical disability, chronic pain, and neurochemical or structural brain changes intersect with severe depression.Compared to Psychiatric Baselines: While pure psychiatric conditions (like major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder) carry higher absolute annual suicide rates than MS, the relative increase in risk for an MS patient compared to a healthy control (an SMR around 1.5–2.2) is comparable to or higher than many other chronic medical illnesses, driven heavily by high rates of under-recognized clinical depression (affecting up to 50% of MS patients over their lifetime).Key Risk Factors in MSSevere or clinical depression and anxietyHigher levels of physical disability and progressive disease subtypesSocial isolation and lower incomeYounger age at onset

Perhaps lonliness is more than just being with people, maybe it' about finding your inner man and peace; whatever that looks like for you.

I am sure we all experience dark days sometimes. But sites like this in my opinion are meant to be positive and safe spaces to uplift and encourage, show empathy, and understanding towards one another. Reading these statistics would make anybody depressed! Let’s stay positive and hopeful despite the statistics. 🙂
