Optic neuritis

Hello, looking for some words of wisdom, am fairly recently diagnosed (March this year) luckily symptoms have been fairly manageable so far. However Thursday morning I woke up without much sight in my right eye, trip to eye casualty later and diagnosis of optic neuritis. They’ve said it will heal itself in about 4/5 weeks and ‘not to worry’ They considered steroids but decided against it. Just wondering what peoples experience of optic neuritis was? How long it took for eyesight to come back, has anyone had the steroids and what are they like? Thanks for reading
@RC83

I had it 11 years ago. It took around 6 months for the bluriness to go down to a residual level. At which point the eye was usable but far from perfect. As the years have gone by it's got a bit better every year and I've recently scored 100% in the visual DVLA field test without glasses. What will impact me for life is Uthofs phenomena - do a search for it. It's very rare to have ON in the second eye as well.

I've had it a number of times. It does resolve itself in a few weeks (for me anyway). Steroids were never much use for me. I did find carbemazepine (actually an epilepsy drug) sorted it out really quickly, but this was over 30 years ago so not sure if they can use it now? It was prescribed by the MS neurologist who diagnosed my MS all those years ago. You could ask? It's worth a try.
