Applying for Disability in the U.S.

Anyone have experience with applying for disability? I’ve heard it takes a REALLY long time to get approved, and most people get declined, is this true? Also, if you are still working does that disqualify you from receiving benefits?

It took about 2 years to be approved, I got denied the first time I filed myself. I got a great disability attorney and was approved the second go around. Doctor stated I couldn't work for my current employer anymore before I filled first. During the 2 years I was waiting I also went to vocational rehab and went through a program for several months in the middle they said I am not eligible for any suitable employment.
