On Dark Patterns
Bear with me on this one, I need to unpack stuff first.
In digital products and services, they talk of User eXperience (UX) The User Interface (UI) is part of that, but also the structure, the "flow", how many pages/screens or clicks to do something.
Obviously the goal is to make things as frictionless as possible, and it's fascinating.
What few people know, (many working in UX don't) is that sometimes you want to add friction to the experience, make something difficult, to disincentive users from doing it. This is called a "Dark Pattern".
This can be very deliberate (try and see if you can delete your Amazon account) or more, passively/tacitly done by leaving basic temp pages on stuff you don't want to be doable easily (some of the pages they take you to when you click 'unsubscribe' on email lists. There's like three, half-condradictory check boxes, double and triple negatives, it's Kafkaesque)
Okay lecture over. I put it to you that the administrative difficulty in accessing the PIP is a dark pattern. It's not "deliberate", but improving it would only increase the number of applications, some of them successful, do why do it.
I've heard anecdotes about the program to get student loans reimbursed if you work as a teacher that makes me think it's the same.
Once you know about Dark Patterns, you will see them everywhere. In digital, of course, but also IRL.
What have you spotted?
A heavier steering mode on my car to make it feel more engaging. What pissed me off about PIP was when I looked at applying for it there was nothing on the criteria list about man-handling children which is the main thing I struggle with.
I work with asylum seekers and I can confirm that this is also the policy of the Home Office, whatever the far right may claim.
