Thoughts on diet, Whal’s Protocol

Hi all, I am new here. I was diagnosed 3 years ago. I take teriflunomide but my first inclination was to try to combat symptoms with food. I heard about Dr. Terry Whal’s story and the diet and decided to dive in. I bought the book and her recipe book and it sat on my desk for about 4 months. It looked daunting. I couldn’t bring myself to start reading it but I finally got fed up with my own procrastination and downloaded it to listen to. I listened to the whole thing. Admittedly, there was a lot of it that “was above my pay grade” so to speak but I got the jist of it all. I already eat pretty healthfully but I have my weaknesses. I’ve never met a potato chip I didn’t like! I eat tons of salad, fruit and cabbage and onions and garlic. Chicken and beef are my protien choices (trying to stay organic and grass fed and all that) and I do my best to stay away from gluten and dairy. I can’t say that I ever followed to a T but did pretty well for about 8 months but I also can’t say that I really FELT any better. Maybe a bit less inflamation in my joints but not consistently. Then I just found myself daydreaming about bread. Real, regular old flour bread. I tried all the alternatives. A bunch of expensive ingredients that you need a bunch of binders to make work and it still doesn’t taste like bread. I don’t know. I’ve fallen “off the wagon” I guess and allowing myself to pretty much eat what I want, try not to go overboard when I do have junk but healthy on the whole. I have a couple extra pounds on because of it (which doesn’t thrill me) but mentally, it makes me happier. I was just feeling super restricted. Ms already controls enough. I struggle! I feel conflicted all the time, guilty if I eat cheese or bread but cave to it. Anybody tried her protocol? What do/ddid you think of it? Thoughts on diet managing the disease? Is anything actually proven to better/worsen ms and symptoms?

This book was recommended to me too when I was first diagnosed. I read some but didn’t get into it. I’m of the opinion that it’s better to approach my MS from all sides. I take a DMT, vitamins, try to exercise and watch my stress and diet but I’m a vegetarian so Paleo doesn’t work for me but might for you.

@messy100 thanks for your response. I’ve done it all, vegetarian for awhile, keto for a few years actually and nothing “extreme” was ever sustainable for me. I like your approach. 😊
