Living with MS is a strange thing
People say, "There's no cure," and that's true... but many people with MS today will still live into their 80s or 90s. That's a long time.
I've realised bitter people are full of poison, and I don't want to spend decades drinking it.
I know I'm not going to magically fix my MS. Living with it feels a bit like walking a tightrope. If you spend the whole journey staring down at the drop, you're far more likely to lose your balance.
For me, it makes more sense to stand up straight, look forwards, and put one foot in front of the other.
MS has earned its reputation. It's a cruel disease. But it doesn't have to become absolute hell every single day.
Something I've been asking myself lately is this...
How much of my fatigue is actually MS, and how much am I accidentally helping it along?
Have I genuinely had a hard day?
Have I actually had enough sleep... or am I just tired? Am I trying to top up poor sleep by lying around exhausted, convincing myself I've rested when really all I've done is spend more hours in the day feeling tired?
Did I eat enough... or have I fuelled myself with the nutritional equivalent of feeding a small rodent?
Have I drunk enough water... or have I been surviving on Monster Energy, otherwise known as liquid piss magnets? 😅
Have I paced myself... or tried to cram three days into one?
MS fatigue is very real, but I've realised I have to be honest with myself before blaming every bad day on MS. Sometimes it's the disease. Sometimes it's me. Usually it's a bit of both.
For me, sleep, food, hydration, exercise and pacing are the foundations. They won't cure MS, but they give my body the best chance to cope with it.
I can't always choose what MS throws at me.
I can choose how I prepare for it, how I respond to it, and whether I keep putting one foot in front of the other.
That's enough for me.
And if anything I've written has offended anyone, I'm genuinely sorry. This isn't aimed at anybody else. It's just me thinking out loud about my own journey and what helps me keep moving forward. ❤️
