Mental health

I was at hospital last week seeing a lady called Ashleigh who is a student from Edinburgh currently based out of Clinical Neuropsychology in Dundee who is currently performing a survey on people with multiple sclerosis who have had suicidal thoughts. So I was taking part in the process. It’s important to express that I am NOT currently having suicidal thoughts, I’ve had my dark moments in the past but I’m currently in a very very good place. I was telling her about my friends and family, we talked about my support system. Was good to get all my previous issues out there, it was like verbal diarrhoea once I started. I honestly don’t think anybody with MS can honestly say they haven’t experienced depression or worse at some point. I definitely think help is needed for people with MS in regards to mental health.

Totally agreed! Sometimes I wonder why my neurologist doesn’t make a specific point to ask how I am doing mentally at each appointment (probably because their time is limited) and ask whether I want to seek a series of counseling sessions. I think a lot of people won’t take action for help on their own, but if your doctor suggested it, you might say, “yeah, that’s a good idea.” Even if you just need a few sessions from time to time.
