Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for pain?

Over the last 25y or so I have utterly random bouts of neuropathic pain in my right ear. It feels as if someone is pushing a sharp pencil onto my eardrum and depending on how ‘sporty’ it is it can spread to the area around my ear. It is tender to press around the ear as well. It means I can’t wear any type of earphone (in or over) and my glasses arm can start to make it ache as well. It might not be a thing for 6 months, it may be a 5 min thing or like now it is hanging around for days. Regarding over the counter painkillers: has anyone had any success with ibuprofen, paracetamol (acetaminophen), or aspirin? I am unwilling to take things like baclofen or other Rx drugs as they either take too long to work, don’t work v well or take too long to work. I cannot determine what the trigger may be. It seems utterly random. Not related to alcohol, diet, exercise, temperature afaik. Any ideas what may be the trigger? Thanks.

With regards to painkillers, on the assumption you are allowed to take them, I do a combination. Boots sell ibuprofen in 400 mg (96 per packet) so I take one of those along with 2 x 500 mg paracetamols. At night I take the codeine 8 mg with paracetamol 500 mg (two tablets) with the ibuprofen. I discovered I could combine paracetamol with ibuprofen when dealing with my daughter’s recurrent ear infections. With regards to your ear, try getting in to see your ENT dept. The problem could be in your inner ear. Good luck. I realised that I sound like a real druggie 😄

Put me £5 on ear infection ! You don’t always get a temperature with ear infections. Amytriptyline is good for any unexplainable wierd symptoms I find. Baclofen is not a bad little piece of kit for the right type of thing. I use it for stiffness in toes and fingers. And the hug is all muscle related so it’s on it for that.
