Story about the start of my MS journey
I don't know if I'd call it a funny story, but it's certainly a bit odd.
So I had my first relapse in 2012 (although I think I had symptoms predating that with hindsight). Anyway it's 2012, I'm on a year out from university, and when I'm not studying Physics in preparation for my final year I was reading a lot of comic books, so I visit a comic book shop in the city quite regularly.
One day I wake up with pins and needles, numbness and pain in my right hand, arm and the right side of my face, and it doesn't go away. At roughly the same time my buddy who works at the comic shop starts getting a sharp pain in his right eye and his vision is all washed out in that eye.
We both independently are seeking medical advice and I'm not really getting anywhere, so one day later in the year I pick up my comics then drop the bag as my dexterity is messed up in my right hand. I complain to my friend about how sick of my hand I am and what a hassle it is, then out of nowhere my buddy looses his temper, tells me he's 'sick of hearing about my hand cos' it's no big deal and what's going on with his eye is really serious'. It's no big deal at the time but the memory sticks with me.
Before too long I'm not longer collecting comics and I don't return to university for my final year as my health has deteriorated. Takes me 3 years to get my diagnosis, RRMS, considered Highly Active, it still is though thankfully I'm feeling relatively stable these days. Randomly a couple of weeks ago find out my buddy also got diagnosed with RRMS and had to stop working. So we both had our first relapses within a week of one another, both got the same kind of MS. Don't know if I'll ever get to speak to him again, but if I do I'm totally reminding him of shouting at me for complaining about my insignificant problems when his eye was sore 😁
