Hip surgery
Im considering a total hip replacement and have read that 33% of people who have MS get complications from pneumonia to revision surgery. The surgeon has also stressed the risks but more importantly has indicated that it might not produce the pain relief I hoped for, as this could be coming from back issues. Both the back and hip are as result of my altered gait. So my question is has anyone had a total hip replacement and what were the outcomes. Love to hear your experiences. thanks
I’ve had two - one when I was 22, then another revision when I was 34 (not related to MS, my ball joint was outdated, and couldn’t keep up with me!) When I had the first one, it changed my whole life - I went from not being to climb stairs without help or put on my own socks, and not being able to sleep because of pain at its worst, to being 100% pain free and doing anything I wanted to. I ran a 10K race last month. 💪🏻 It’s different for everyone and of course there are risks and things you need to be aware of, so weighing up what’s best for you will involve a bit of thinking on your part, but for me, it was the best decision to make, and it has made such a huge difference to my life, I hardly even notice I have it, except at the airport! 😂 Feel free to give me a shout if you’ve got any questions, and I hope you get some relief from your pain whatever you choose to do :)
I was opting for weight loss surgery and because I was not on any sort of treatment for the MS, my neurologist would not clear me for surgery because the complications from the stress our body goes through from a surgery. Now I’m on treatment she has no problem with me having a surgery. Are you on treatment for the MS? What is your Neurologist input on the surgery?
