All lives do matter. But it’s also true that certain lives have historically been, and continue, to be oppressed (and that’s putting it lightly). All lives matter, but not all lives have to walk on eggshells in fear that they will one day also be gasping for their life because of a fraudulent check, or because they’ve gone out for a jog, or have the police called because they’re reminding someone to keep a dog on the leash in the park (or continue to be covertly and systemically oppressed). Some lives get away with a lot worse and have a lot more privileges simply because of the colour of their skin, which is why it’s so important for these lives specifically to understand why, and support #blacklivesmatter .
Here’s some reading that’s quite useful on understanding why #blacklivesmatter and ways that it can really value our collective support!
