Balance Dogs for help MS

I found an article on the use of service dogs trained to assist MS people with things like help getting up, turning lights on, getting things like a pen off the floor and the best thing was the dog can be trained to pick up on when a person is getting fatigued and nudge you over to a chair. This alone is great but studies have shown that a dog can help people who struggle with depression. Obviously the dog needs to be a larger breed to be better able to assist in helping you up. I am looking into a Golden Retriever or a Lab. I have not had any luck finding a service Dog organization to help me. My husband and I discussed this and I think we are going to buy a dog and hire a trainer on our own because I spend a great deal of time home alone and the dog will go a long way with keeping depression away.

I will not stop in trying to find a way for other MSers to have access to get a service dog. It’s all about staying positive and independent. If you just give in the the things that you can no longer do then you will rob yourself of having a great life. One Great thing about being off work is you have lots of time to contact people until you get the answers you are looking for. That being said if you have any idea who I could pester for help with this I would appreciate the help.

Hi, I fostered a retriever puppy for an assocition in brittany france, we fostered the Ewok from 8 weeks old till he was 18months old, I went to training lessons every 2 weeks at their centre, they first train with food to learn all the commands, its amazing how quick they learn, they have Labs and golden retriever because of their gentil nature, I’m sure there is assistant dogs in the uk. they are trained to open doors, close doors, pick things up, bark if there is a problem, they learn so many commands, hope you find either a assocition or train your own dog.

I have a FB friend who depends on her assistance dog. She (Folly the dog!) has been every where!
Just google “assistance dogs”…the organisation are out there. Both you and the dog have to go thru training, i know that.
