Very concerned.. Could this be MS?

Hello all, I’m a 29yr old mama of a 2yr old and would appreciate any insight and/or advice as to the likelihood that my recent symptoms point to MS. I’m getting mixed messages regarding exercise/exertion triggering MS relapse, including my doc who says it’s not very likely? I have a brain MRI scheduled on the 21st and I am so scared of the possibility of MS. It all started about 2 months ago when I was pruning a tree with hedge shears, when suddenly both arms felt weak. Then all these other symptoms came within the next few weeks starting with a numb right arm then moved to my left arm down to my pinky/ring fingers on both arms. I thought it might be a pinched nerve since only the ulnar side of my arms were affected, but EMG was normal. And to make things more scary, my left leg went numb too. It feels like the sensation is coming from the back of the leg starting at the low back/butt and going down to the bottom of my foot/toes, similar to sciatica but without the pain. It seems to be relieved with massage or pressure to certain points on my leg. Can MS present like sciatica in the back of the leg? I’m also concerned about the possibility of having Lhermitte’s sign. I do feel a discomfort in my back when flexing my neck that feels like a pulling/tightening/burning in my upper mid back, but not so much a shock feeling? Also, can symptoms go away for days and/or with a position change, and/or come back during a relapse? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated🙏🏼

Yes, it could be MS, but I'm actually leaning towards a pinched nerve or disc problems for this. The MRI should provide a bit more information for your doctor, but if it doesn't identify a problem, keep fighting for more tests! I won't say that exercise will trigger a relapse, but it can certainly bring on various symptoms until you get rested up. That's just normal for MS. I have tons of symptoms that vary in intensity based on what I've been doing lately, how I'm sitting, whether I slept well. Just take it step by step. Get the MRI and see what it says. Have your full spine examined. Get blood tests. Regardless of the cause, you need answers, so don't give up!

Hi @scaredmama, it's horrible to be worried and scared about something being wrong. At least this is all very recent and you've jumped on it straight away. Make sure you get an appointment as soon as possible after the mri, as you don't want to be waiting around for a follow-up. Your symptoms could be a range of things, including ms, so take a deep breath, and focus on establishing some facts. All the best x

Hello all, I received results from my brain MRI which stated Normal examination, No evidence of demyelinating disease. Does this rule out MS? Also, a small mucous retention cyst in left maxillary sinus was found. Should I be concerned?

Hello, good to hear the results from your mri scan. You need to have it checked out by a doctor but I have Ms and a blood disease ( I am lupus positive) which has the same symptoms as MS. Kind regards, Anouk.

@Scaredmama Hello - I hope you're ok. I know how scary it is to have weird stuff happening in your body without explanation! For an MS diagnosis doctors look for signs of demyelination in both the brain and the spinal cord. It's very unlikely to be MS if your brain doesn't have any lesions showing on the MRI. Keep talking to your doctors and request as many tests for everything as possible so you can find out what's up x
