Dealt a Rotten Hand in the Card Game of Life

Here is a positive note on anxiety. There is a genetic component to anxiety, with heritability ranging from 30 – 50%. This means that if you suffer from anxiety and one of your parents suffers from anxiety, you were dealt a rotten hand in the card game of life. To make matters harsher for you, there is comorbidity between anxiety and depression (Pinel 2018). Lucky you. You were dealt anxiety with a side-helping of depression. The positive part? YOUR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ARE NOT YOUR FAULT. Stop beating yourself up for feeling anxious and depressed. Your challenge is to learn to live your best life IN SPITE OF the hand you were dealt, i.e. your genetics. Of course those of us who live with MS doubled down in the womb and got a sprinkling of genes which are susceptible to autoimmune disease too. Nevertheless - our challenge to live our best life is harder than most other people, but when we meet that challenge we show the world how strong and capable we are.

When I was almost 2 I flipped over my high chair and fell out the window. My cousins, aunts and uncles all either jumped out the same window or ran out the door. My grandmother and mum locked themselves in the bedroom because they were sure I was dead. My mum is on disability now for severe anxiety disorder. I have days where I'm shaking and short of breath at the mere thought of leaving the house.
