Attitude

Tuesday Oct 17 Post 112 Warning- some readers may find this post offensive. Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. — VIKTOR FRANKL, MD, PHD This is the quote that started me on my blogging adventure, started my counselling business and spurred my recovery from depression. Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning”, written about his experiences in a Concentration Camp, is inspiring. It forced me to consider if a concentration camp inmate, whose friends and family are suffering and dying all around him, can find the will to survive then why shouldn’t I? I live a comfortable first-world life. I have food in the fridge, water in the tap, a roof over my head and clothes on my back. I have friends and family. What earthly reason do I have for not trying to survive? Chronic disease? Pain? Depression? Those are unpleasant, yes, but I learned from Viktor Frankl that I could choose my own attitude towards those challenges. I chose to “suck it up and carry on.” Whatever your challenges are, whatever your circumstances, whatever your limitations and restrictions; remember Frankl’s words: you have the freedom to choose your own attitude towards your circumstances.

That is a great quote. I feel this is a question of free will/ free thought. Do we have freedom to choose. When our genes are set, and we are raised and live in a certain environment. I guess we have more choices as we get older, but this is based on money, which is awarded to those lucky enough to have high IQ/EQ and have managed to access education during childhood 🤷‍♀️. Are we free to choose 🤷‍♀️. I hope we can, but I often feel I have what I have.
