Anxiety and MS

Almost 5% of Americans have Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Melchert. Foundations of Professional Psychology). I assume this is also true for Canadians and furthermore, I assume that 100% of people who live with MS have anxiety. The study of the causes and treatments for anxiety have been around as long as the study of psychology. We counsellors deal with clients who present with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and we have learned that the research data on anxiety strongly argues for a preventive orientation to dealing with anxiety, including a lot of attention being given to a client’s behavior and lifestyle. This also works for people living with MS. If my client tells me he/she is anxious, my initial questions are, “What is causing you anxiety in your life? How can you adjust your behaviour to lessen that anxiety? How can you adjust your lifestyle to lessen that anxiety?” Of course, if a client lives with MS, we explore ways that beliefs, attitudes and behaviors can reduce MS-related anxiety.

@HeidiHelps Hi your being a a little presumptuous about 100% of people with ms suffer anxiety. I've been shot at, bombed and beaten in the past that I do admit was rather scary at times with a penchant of fear. Getting married made me anxious, the birth of my daughter made me anxious and still does 24 years later do I need to seek help to explain what anxiety is? I doubt you'll even come close now please calm down with the spurious 100% fact it's making me anxious. Wish you all the best but please calm the rhetoric down, you'll upset the children.

@HeidiHelps

So glad to hear you don't suffer from anxiety, in spite of (I dare to presume) having MS.
