I know it’s bad for you (especially with MS) but exactly how bad? Scale of one to ten. It’s just that I don’t drink and I tried quitting smoking and then I sort of started again and I like it- is MS gonna take everything from me?

Smoking with MS can increase your chances of developing long term diabilities, so it really is in your best interests to quit, however, if it would make your life really miserable if you quit then smoke away. Ultimatly it is your choice

Thanks- I reckon I’ll quit. It seems stupid but I feel as if it’s taking away every piece of me even the bad bits. Does that make sense?

Can I ask does this include passive smoking that it can cause more problems for MS sufferers?
Never heard anything about smoking and MS before

I can understand your point of view, it does feel like your MS is taking everything away from you sometimes, but just because you think like that, its doesn’t make it a reality. Try and take a step back for a moment, try and view things from a more objective viewpoint. I know, thats easy for me to say sitting here, 1000s of miles away, I’ve no idea what things are like for you and one persons molehill is another persons mountain. You’ve only recently been diagnosed, it takes time to start seeing things more rationally, to adjust to things now.
Munchies, I am no expert on the whole MS thing, and certainly not on the smoking with MS, but it would make sense that passive smoking may have a simmilar effect, but I don’t know. There’s a lot of information out there on the internet about smoking and MS, the MSRC has summed up quite a bit of the information on their site http://www.msrc.co.uk/index.cfm/fuseaction/show/pageid/2873
I’ve had a quick flick through and apparently if someone quits smoking it can reverse the effects that the smoking has already caused
I hope thats helped.

Its funny , I smoked for years until two years ago. During this time I always educated and was considered ” Fitter ” then all my non smoking friends. I quit. Six months later diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy after being admitted for chest pain. Then , in the midst of this my face went numb and now am waiting for my final interval MRI to confirm MS. Tell you what, giving up smoking was not all it was cracked up to be , I have never felt physically worse in my life.

p.s. But remember smoking IS actually bad for you lol x

I asked the same question to my doctor – he said smoking is bad; as bad for someone with ms as for anyone else. So, the advice would be ‘you should stop smoking as anyone should, not because you have ms’. He also said, when I was diagnosed, ‘if you want to quit, you can wait a while before you do, the stress for quitting can be – his words – worst for ms then smoking.’ How about that? No right answers, uh?;P

@catarina- with ms you never get straight answers. But I must admit that I am getting headaches and my eye sights a bit crummy so the whole ‘should I be quitting’ thing HAS to happen no matter how slow. It is definately stressful but I’ve been so sick lately and I dunno whether it’s from smoking. It’s weird I figure that if I relapse I’d rather know that it’s not from smoking because I have control over that thing.
