Work advise needed..

Hi My name is Martin, newly diagnosed with MS in May. I've had it for 20 years, first attack in 1997 but noone spotted it (thank god.. LOL ) so have been working in IT sales ever since. I have Secondary progressive and have most symptoms of MS but thankfully not "really" bad. My current employer is putting an immense about of pressure on me and I believe is trying to either remove me, get me to leave or change my job which will help them remove me once I change role. Anyway, very stressful and I'm going to the doctors for help. MY QUESTION......... You would not know I've got MS and I can still outperform most people in sales development. BUT: How has anyone found finding a new job in sales when you have MS? A friend of mine has said, crikey companies will have no issue with you in fact they would welcome someone with MS that could do a role like that because it ticks a big for them. I ask as I am SO STRESSED out with everything as my boss has said to me that if I stay in the same job, I'll fail. Or they could move me into another role (which I think is more bailable or he said that we go down the legal road which will be very expensive me and then NO COMPANY will ever employ you......... :( I'm worried and would welcome any helpful comments.. thank you.

Hi Martin, I'm not sure I can be a big help on the question of recruitment for Sales Jobs when you have MS, but I will quite possibly be facing a similar challenge very soon as I'm a Fundraising Manager (sales under any other name!) and the charity I work for, is making it's staff redundant (today!) so I will soon be on the look out for new work. I'm also recently diagnosed (September) and have also been told I've had MS for around 17 years, with my first attack being put down to 'one of those things'. Your current employer sounds unsupportive at best and totally unscrupulous at worst! I'm so sorry to see you're going through what appears to be discrimination based on your diagnosis alone. Have you sought any legal advice on this - because based on what you've said here, there are no other performance related issues and therefore they are breaking so many employment laws! But that aside, I guess if I were you I would be re-evaluating whether I wanted to stay with an employer who, on the face of it looks as though they are going to generate a lot of stress. :( I'm undecided about disclosing my diagnosis to my next employer and veering towards not disclosing initially - however I guess in a Sales role where you are probably required to drive this would be flagged up at the point where they need to see your driving licence? Sorry I can't be more help - I'm sure many of the other MSer's on here will be though. All the best Deb

Hi @gelek , you need to do a modicum of research as your employer is potentially braking the law with their approach to this situation. A good place to start is here :- https://www.mstrust.org.uk/a-z/work
