Vitamin D

Hi all :) hope everyone is doing well, or as well as they can considering. My neurologist has told me during my last meeting she wants me on vitamin D, she confirmed in the follow up later dosages etc during winter and out of winter. I forgot to ask whether this is something I need to get prescribed by my GP or I can just buy some from a health shop. Last year around my diagnosis the neurologist who diagnosed me (not my Ms neurologist) also said this and I was GP prescribed some which were liquid form in a capsule, which I took one course for a month. Do I need to get this or as I mentioned can I buy from a healthy store. Any suggestions welcome :) thanks all
@cunner

I take 4000iu strength capsules got them from Amazon the gp's won't be as strong I also take vitamin b12 which I find to help my energy levels but everyone's different

@DominicS

James, Absolutely get them prescribed. When it is on prescription it has cleared a far higher bar than anything available over the counter. I am prescribed 10000iu that I take every other day. There was a pretty big study in Ontario that concluded (memory here, it is some 10y ago I think) that a minimum level to be effective was 4200iu a day. The aim of the 10k every other day is to maintain a running level above the 4200iu threshold. The way Vit D3 (Cholecalciferol I think you may see it as) is handled by the body is that it needs constant replenishment as excess is excreted regularly. Different to many other types of drugs like, say, a Mab which is taken by infusion. In thge UK the GP will have Sunvit as the brand on their computer system that comes in a 10k Iu dose. It is cheap as chips for them to prescribe and any decent GP will give it in 4 monthly tranches as it isn't dangewrous and it saves you £9 a month prescription charge.
