Spasticity ?

Hi all
I haven’t posted in a while,
All my pain is heightened at night and I am experiencing a lot of new symptoms but it’s the latest one that’s most troublesome I wake up with terrible stiffness and numbness from my neck down and when I try to move there is pain it even hurts to breathe no amount of spasm meds will relieve it and wears off by morning.
Any ideas have been back to Neuro and again my symptoms are atypical but that dosnt help.
I would appreciate any feedback.
Regards
Mary Devereux

@mary_devereux , a good mattress is a good basis for a decent night’s sleep.

Hi Mary.
I have the same with spasticity in my legs.
I found stretching out any time u get a chance especially before bed when u are just lying on the mattress stretch out those quads and give yourself a foot massage.

I try to do two sessions a day in my exercise room. The morning routine is more about strength and balance (with 5 minutes on the bike to warm up) the evening routine is 5 minutes of bike again but focuses on stretching and strength/balance as can be tolerated.

I also remember to drink a good amount of water at least 4 hours before bedtime and take magnesium (over the counter) as well as Gralise (extended release nerve pain med) a couple of hours before bed. I’ve just added a B complex before bed and always take my D twice a day remembering to also take in some calcium.

I’m having issues with my mattress firmness at the moment and find I keep switching to the sofa during the night and find myself lying on my side bracing my back against the back of the sofa and my feet on an arm…bad habit hope to give up 😉

@mary_devereux , my comment above was just to consider whether your mattress is doing a good job for you…..

Magnesium is a good call. This is also available as a cream, which can be applied topically on the affected muscles.

Mary,
.
I agree with the steps above. Magnesium 500mg 4 times a day is a good place to start. I take 1 with my morning meds, 1 with vitamins I take at breakfast and dinner and 1 with my bedtime meds.
.
Are you taking any medication at bedtime for spasticity? I currently take Zanaflex (Tizanidine) and Baclofen together because they each enhance the other and they are both sedative. My dose is Zanaflex 4mg 3-4 tabs and Baclofen 5mg 1 tab. This is a high dose of Zanaflex but I have built up to this over the years.
.
I also take ambien at night to help me sleep. I have been diagnosed 16+ years and insomnia has been a problem most of that time.
.
I have found Clonazepam and Flexeril help me when I take them in my AM pills. Neurontin (Gabapentin) is also a good way to assist with pain through a differ t pathway than all the others.
.
In non drug interventions, I use a heated mattress pad and sometimes a heated blanket to soothe sore muscles. I also have reusable rice packs-you can fill a sock with plain uncooked rice and heat it in the microwave. This provides both heat and pressure for pain relief. Someone made me rice packs that look like bean bags sews together (so the rice doesn’t move around) and those work well to drape over a thigh muscle or shoulders/back.
.
A warm bath before bed can be helpful.
.
If you find that sitting on your bed causes any uncomfortable pressure points you could add a 2-3 inch memory foam topper to relieve pressure on bones.
.
These are just some of the things I use that are not already covered. I hope some of them help you.
.
Be well,
Emma
