Sick Leave

I have been placed on sick for my mental and physical health. I currently work as a bar supervisor but after this (and being rejected from GMP because of my MS) I am struggling to know what career is best for me 😔 I know this is a very broad question because we are all so different but does anyone have any careers that they find fitting for a person with MS?

There are so many symptoms and levels of impact with MS. For me the main issue is mobility and to a lesser degree eyesight. I will have a test later this month to try to measure, or at least establish a baseline, cognitive impairment. So- it is hard to suggest what will work for you now...or in the future. For me I certainly need a desk job where I am not expected to spend much time on my feet or walking around. I'd prefer not to have to commute long distances or for long times as I feel vulnerable when I am out on bad roads in rural areas that I might have to leave my vehicle to walk for help (I live in a cold rural area where being stranded would be dangerous). I should avoid high stress as that is not good for MS progression. I should also make sure I get good sleep for the same reasons. I need controlled hours or I won't be able to maintain a good schedule of PT or making necessary appointments). That makes it looks like I can't really work in a job...but I can. Just has to be the right job...and I am looking for it right now. I am good at ERP systems and accounting so just interviewed for a job working master data management and maintenance. Look across your skillset, experience and abilities and there will be something. Just maybe not the thing you've done in past but something that can use the skills and experience you bring to the job- ;-)

My job would be quite physically demanding but not so mentally, I’ve had to have some adjustments made so I’m not working in areas with lots of stairs because I struggle with them areas and feel beyond exhausted at the end of the day. My goal is to avoid stress as much as possible, so any job with the least amount of stress is what I’d be going for. If you’re not in a good place mentally that will directly affect your physical health also so maybe just take some time and allow yourself to heal mentally and physically and don’t be hard on yourself for needing to do it. It’s a hard call, because as time passes your needs will change. But I feel personally if you’re happier in your work place with reasonable management it makes all the difference
